The Ministry of Industry is actively coordinating with business people and industry associations to formulate strategic policies, such as in the context of readiness to face a new normal order. An example is the synergy effort to spur the growth of the food and beverage industry amid the pressure of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are reviewing various proposals from food and beverage industry players that will be included in the policy to restore productivity and growth in this sector ahead of the new normal phase,” Director General of the Ministry of Industry Ago Industry, Abdul Rochim, said here on Wednesday (3/6).

According to Rochim, the Ministry of Industry is also preparing a circular letter which will become the guidance in carrying out industrial activities in the new normal era. This circular will accommodate important points contained in the Ministry of Health Circular Number 328 of 2020 concerning Covid-19 Prevention Guidelines in Office and Industrial Workplaces in Supporting Business Sustainability in Pandemic Situations.

Rochim revealed, from the results of coordination, domestic food and beverage industry players expressed their readiness to operate in the new normal era, while still paying attention to health protocols. However, to sustain the activities of this sector, it is necessary to support the availability of raw materials and the smooth flow of logistics.

Furthermore, Rochim projects, the prices of food and beverage products will be relatively stable in the new normal era. “We have coordinated with the Indonesian Food and Beverage Entrepreneurs Association (GAPPMI), and they are committed to maintaining price stability during the new normal period,” he explained.

According to the Director General of Agro Industry, the main key to recovering the food and beverage industry sector lies with retail traders. Therefore, if later the shopping centers have begun to be opened gradually in a new normal period, it is hoped that public demand will soon recover and be able to move the industrial sector. Rochim hopes, with the implementation of the new normality phase, the food and beverage industry sector can grow by 4%.

“In addition, the utilization of this industrial sector which had dropped to 50-60% due to the Covid-19 pandemic is also expected to return to 80%,” he said.

The Ministry of Industry noted, the food and beverage industry is a sector that has a significant contribution to the national economy. In 2019, the growth of the food and beverage industry will reach 7.78%. This figure is higher than the growth of the non-oil and gas industry which is at 4.34% and the national industry growth of 5.02%. In addition, in the same year, the food and beverage industry sector also contributed up to 36.40% to the GDP of the non-oil and gas processing industry.

“This shows the important role of the food and beverage industry on the growth of industry and the national economy,” he concluded.
